What are the different types of carpet?

  Saxony

This one level cut pile will have a short pile height of ½ inch or less and dense construction in which the individual yarn tufts are very closely packed.  The relatively plain, clean surface is generally categorized as formal.  Choose a subdued luster for formal traditional applications and a bright luster for upscale contemporary settings.

Suggested rooms for Saxony plush are the Living Room and Dining Room if you entertain frequently and stain resistance and clean-ability are important.  The Bedroom is a low traffic area where delicate colors and textures are appropriate.

  Frieze

The approximate translation for the French word frieze means “curl,” a feature that characterizes its texture.  Straight tufts mix with those given a built-in curl to create exceptional texture that masks footprints well.  This style is suitable for more in-formal decors.

  Level loop

A simple loop pile with tufts of equal height; this is the preferred construction for the “Berber” style with its random flecks of color.  It is durable and appropriate in informal interiors and high traffic areas.  This durable carpet works well on stairs and halls, family rooms, kids room, bathrooms and kitchens.

  Mutli-level loop

A loop pile carpet with two or three tuft levels on the carpet face.  This style is regaining popularity in more sophisticated, semiformal decors.  It works well in halls and on stairs, family rooms, kids room, kitchens and bathrooms.

  Cut and Loop

The carpet yarns are tufted into islands of high cut tufts and ¼ inch lower loop tufts to form a high-low sculptured pattern.  This style is generally available in multiple shades and suits more informal settings.  These work well in Living Room, dining Rooms and low traffic bedrooms.

What is Twist?

Twist is put into the yarn prior to carpet tufting.  In general, the more turns per inch, the tighter the twist, the less bulk in the carpet, but the better the carpet’s performance.  Twisting allows the tuft to keep its shape and stand straight.  One way to judge the twists levels of various samples is to look closely at the cut tips of the individual tufts.  They should be neat and well defined rather than flared open.

How is carpet made?

Carpet construction will determine not only the beauty, but also the wearability of your floor fashions.  Most of the carpet you will find is tufted, produced on tufting machines.  Basically, these are huge sewing machines that insert pile yarns into a backing material.  During the tufting process, these machines often use over 1,000 needles, which can be adjusted to vary the height of the individual loops that appear on the surface of the carpet.

After the loops are inserted into the primary backing material, a heavy layer of latex sizing is applied to the underside to firmly lock the tufts in place.  Over this, a secondary backing material is bonded to add further strength and stability.  Tufting is the fastest and also the most economical method of manufacturing carpet.  Because of this, tufted carpet is generally less expensive to purchase than woven carpet.  The tufting process now produces over 90 percent of all the carpet made in America.  The closer the tufts the denser the carpet.

What is the importance of pad?

Top-quality padding extends the life of your carpet as well as adding to its luxurious feel.  Carpet padding is available in varying thickness and densities.  For the right amount of walking support and comfort, padding for use under wall-to-wall carpet should be no thicker than 1/2”.  Padding is available in several different materials such as foam rubber, rubber and urethane.  Not only does good padding make any carpet feel better underfoot, it protects your carpet investment.  Because padding acts like a shock absorber, protecting your carpet from the wear and tear of heavy traffic, it will look better for longer.

What is Density?

Another excellent guide to carpet quality is the density of the pile—the closer the tufts are together, the better.  In comparing samples of the same fiber type, note how close the individual loops or tufts are to each other.  Press down on the pile with one finger and see how easy or difficult it is to penetrate to the backing.  Bend the carpet as it would be bending over a tread of a stair and compare the amount of backing material exposed.  Better carpet will have more closely spaced tufts and will therefore be more difficult to penetrate.
